End of the Beginning... Or Beginning of the End?

      Updated By : Rusty
      06/03/10

So as we enter our last month as your committee, we have been looking back on an awesome year. Lots of good times had, memories made (and subsequently forgotten), and of course good ol' fashioned Dundee Dental School SCANDAL! No-one does it better.

What better way to sum the year up by checking out the photos of Ladies & Gents?

Crasher's tickets for the spectacular DENTAL BALL are still on sale, £45 from a committee member. These include dinner, champers, dancing etc. etc. on the Saturday night.

Those who wish to attend Dental Protection's series of lectures occuring at the Ball, check out the booklet below (click to download):

The very final event (apart from the ball), that we're organising is of course the DDSS Elections for the 2010-11 Committee. This event will take place on Friday 19th March. Sign-up sheets are up now for those third years wishing to put themselves forward for election. The night of (very... we promise!) short speeches and interesting challenges is always a riot, and a great way to blow of revision stress / celebrate the end of the exams.

Starts 6pm, on Friday 19th March on the 6th Floor. Price £2, includes booze and wristband for Mono!

Tata for the noo!

PS - I realise some might be of the opinion that plastering my glorious puss on the homepage of the website is somewhat vain and conceited, but remember my prize for winning the caption competition earlier in the year? Thought I'd forgotten? Not a chance.

As a goose once sqwaked in a TV ad, "IT"S CHHRRRRRRRIIIIIISSSSTMMMAAAAAASSSSSSS!!" Well nearly. But I've seen the Coca-Cola lorry ad so that means its fast approaching (the fact that I looked it up on youtube makes no difference!), and with it - eeek - exams. Boo! No worries, check out all that has been happening and is soon to happen with the DDSS to beat those exam blues!

First up, if you made it back from Field Day in Glasgow without ending up in a prison / hospital / seedy hotel or happy-slapping a lady of the night CONGRATULATIONS! You did Dundee Dental School proud. Glasgow may have rigged just about every other competion, but we hammered them where it really counted, the drinking games! Check the photos in the gallery.

Also, those photos I mentioned before from Raisen Monday are actually online this time (sorry), and can also be found in the gallery.

SO more exciting things... CLOTHING! We will be taking clothing orders up until Friday 27th November, so get your forms filled out ASAP! You can see the designs here, modelled by the lovely LAJ. Oh, and Nahla too.

Perhaps most exciting... DENTAL BALL 2010! What you need to know...

Where? The spectacular Westerwood Hotel, Glasgow
When? Friday 16th until Sunday 18th April, 2010
How much? £145 for full weekend (£160 non-members/alumni), £100 for just the Saturday (though you'd be missing out as Friday night will be awesome!)
What? 2 nights B&B, access to pool/sauna, time to visit spa/golf course, Friday night themed party, 2 course buffet & SILENT DISCO! Saturday night formal ball, ceilidh, disco, 3 course meal, goodie bags, photographers, surprises etc etc..
Basically it's gonna be awesome, best two nights of the year, what a way to celebrate a great year in the DDSS, and a great blow-out before the May exams start! £45 deposit to be in before 11th December, get in quick, this is sure to be popular... See a committee member in the caff at lunch times. Questions? Drop Hannah an e-mail.

There may also be a couple of events before we break for the holidays, so keep your eyes peeled. But for the moment, I bid you....adieu!

PS - Elliot Simpson = douche.

I'm Sooooo Sooooo Soooorrry...

      Updated By : Rusty
      18/10/09

Alright first up, apologies. I screwed up. Majorly. . After leaving camera duties in the more than capable hands of Nahla and Laj on Friday, who captured some beautiful memories, there was an issue and, well....they're all gone. Forever. Oops.

Miss Jackman has supplied me with some photos from Raisen Monday though, so check them out.

From what I remember, Friday was a good night though, some interesting team names and congratulations to the 4th year boys team who won by, and i quote, "cheating our ***** off." All's fair in love and pub quizes i guess.

Right! Next up, FIELD DAY. Full amounts (£35 members/£40 non members) must be paid by Friday 23rd October at the very latest, see a committee member in the dental cafe at lunch time. Theme is Police aCavity, t-shirts will be available to pick up soon, and you can see the design here. So get working on your costumes (remember, no fake weapons!)

For you amusement, I've added a little game below. You have to clout the former US President with some footwear, beware, he's a flexible old fox! No politics here, just a very satisfying sound when you score a point. My record is 270, should be easy to beat.

We Was Wobbed ...

Anyone else still a bit hoarse?

So another event has passed, seems this year is flying in. Friday night went down a treat. After a fantastic DentSoc from Captain Simon Donal from the army (check out his message to you all here), it was off to Fat Sam's for our Pub Idol karaoke competition.

Our very special guest judges were treated to some raw vocal talent, raw perhaps being the key word. Despite the help of a sympathy vote from Dr. Tait (who seemed more in awe of my singing partner's shoes than my Travolta-esque rendition of Greased Lightning), we were eventually pipped in the final by Andy Kinnear, much congratulatory hugs in his direction.

Pics are now up, check them out by clicking below. As always, if you would like a high-res version of any photo, drop me an email. Big thanks to all the judges for turning up and making the night a success.

The next DentSoc will include the always-popular Pub Quiz, as well as a chat from a fine dental company and the standard free booze!

It's on Friday 16th October, at 5.30pm again on the 6th floor, so keep it free! After the DentSoc there will be a little break for you to grab something to eat, then off to Air Bar in the Union for the Pub Quiz at 7.30pm. Entry to all this is only £3.50, including booze and snacks at the DentSoc, the pub quiz itself AND entry into Mono afterwards. Bargain!

Also, remember some Field Day tickets are still available, speak to a committee member AS SOON AS to book your place on what will be a fantastic trip!

Rusty xo

Ps - Caption Competition. So yeah, I am very pleased and proud to announce that the winner of last month's caption competition was...me. Yup. Rusty wins. The fact that I was the only entrant in no way takes away from this glorious victory.

"Jade was surprised (and a tad disappointed), when Paul finally revealed his secret party trick with his five-wood."

Salvete...

      Updated By : Rusty
      15/09/09 (Edit 25/09/09)

Phew! If September is anything to go by, this year is going to be a rather spectacular one at Dundee Dental School...

Hello and apologies for the lack of communication in the last few months! On behalf of the committee could I just give a big welcome to the new first years, you really have chosen the best place to study dentistry in the UK, and the DDSS will ensure your social life is as enjoyable as your academic one!

Already this month Dundee has experienced just how hard us dentists know how to party, Pub Golf 2009 was an event not soon to be forgotten! For anyone with severe gaps in their memory from that night, check out the photos... Same goes for Gaudie Night, were some interesting games in the dental caff set both Seniors and Juniors up for a night of mayhem, or so I'm told anyway..

Of course, this is just the beginning... Juniors, you have a chance to repay your Seniors for their hospitality(!) on Monday 28th September, at Raisen Monday. More details to follow! Then for everyone, there's the DentSoc and Pub Idol to look forward to on Friday October 2nd... It kicks off at 5.30pm on the sixth floor of the Dental School with a talk from the Army. Then on to Fat Sam's at 7pm for our famous karaoke comp, complete with special guest judges, prizes for the winners, and dancing in Fat Sam's afterwards. £3.50 (£4 for non-members) covers Pub Idol, entry to Fat Sam's and your booze for the DentSoc...as always, bargain!

This is always a popular event so be to sure not to miss it! Sign up to our facebook group by clicking above to receive all the latest updates on these and all events...

That's about all for now, just to leave you with a little bit of a caption competition... All you have to do is come up with an amusing quip for the photo below, and you could win a spectacular prize! The winner will receive a genuine DDSS Dental School Survival kit, comprising of a lovely Jack Daniel's branded hipflask, a Guinness branded stress reliever, and a giant inflatable hand thing. (Please note this a genuine constructed survival kit, not some crap we found in a cupboard). Also, your glorious mug will appear on the homepage of this website (if you so desire) for a whole MONTH! I'll also try to hook you up with a little tab in the Dental Cafe, which, by the way is now OPEN! Good luck, and answers on a postcard...

Cheers!

Rusty xo

Ps - Laj is the girl to see re: this year's FIELD DAY... The annual sports competition involves Glasgow, Newcastle and Dundee Dental Schools, pitted against each other in a battle to the death (maybe), to see which dental school reigns supreme. It's on 6th November this year, you get off class especially to go to it, so NO EXCUSES!!

This year we're off to GLASGOW, our biggest rivals, so we need EVERYONE there to show them what's what! Spectators & Participants alike! Football, hockey, tug-o-war, rugby etc etc.. Guaranteed to be cracker! See a committee member in the cafe everyday at lunch time with your £10 deposit and t-shirt size. Full price to be confirmed, includes travel to and from Glasvegas, a meal, entry to a club and of course your Field Day t-shirt! Theme to be confirmed, watch this space...

Pps - What did the dentist see at the North Pole? A molar bear. Haha!

Something New...

      Updated By : Rusty
      18/06/09 (EDIT 21/06/09)

Hello and welcome to another year of dental school madness!! I hope you are all enjoying your summer break/elective/summer school...

It's hard to believe two months have passed since the new committee have taken over the reigns of the dental society, a big thanks to the outgoing committee and all their hard work in making last year so much fun, hopefully this year will be even better!

And who better to lead the DDSS forward than the lovely Lion Queen herself, Nahla. I'm sure few will forget her...er...spectacular performance shall we say...on election night.. Take a second to get to know her and the rest of the committee here.

Two events have passed already... The 22nd May saw stacks of us head to Riverside for the annual Rosebowl, what a day it was! Spectacular weather, awesome banter, tasty Tally's burgers and a third year victory certainly made up for the event being called off the week previous due to the monsoon!

Then on Tuesday night a pub quiz fundraiser was held in Brae's to raise funds to purchase a new cooker for the dental caff... It was a great success, lots of dosh raised, fun had, cakes eaten and some rather interesting team names created!

You can view photos of both events in the gallery. Remember these photos are scaled down, if you want some hi-res versions please drop me an email.

Still to come before the summer break is the end of term BBQ... It's on Thursday 9th July, starting at 7pm in Tally's. After that we'll be heading to Fat Sam's. Tickets will be £4, a bargain! End the year with a great night of banter! Join the Facebook group here.

Also, take a look at the list of exciting events to come after the summer here.

For you social network junkies we have a group on facebook, click on the link above and get yourself signed up.

That's just about all for now, take a look around, get comfy, and if there's anything i can do for you do let me know!
